In a world where humans and daemons, the physical manifestation of the soul, live as one unit, Lyra Belacqua, a girl from Jordan College, must venture to the North to save her friend from the Gobblers when children start disappearing from Oxford and the mysterious and beautiful Mrs. Coulter makes an arrival in town. This story subtly describes the ugly imperfections of life and forces readers to alter their perceptions of familial love and over dependence on a higher power. The book seems to be a lighthearted children's book about a girl's journey to save her friend at first when in reality, it is a deeply meaningful story about the harsh reality of a world void of empathy and love. You would like this book if you like… sci-fi or fantasy.
