Faculty Review: Breathless by Lurlene McDaniel

"Please don't judge me until you hear my story." Travis is a dive team prodigy - the best in his school, likely the best in his state. He is guaranteed to lead his team to a district title. Except... during the summer while diving into the nearby lake, he breaks his femur just as he lifts off. Through a myriad of tests, the doctors determine that he has osteosarcoma. Bone cancer. Travis has to have his leg amputated to hopefully contain the cancer. In one afternoon, the trajectory of Travis's life changes. You follow along in his journey as his friends and family help him navigate the next eighteen months, including some drastic moral quandaries. Breathless is told from the perspective of a few teens, and the characters are easy to relate to.
