Student Review: Butter by Erin Jade Lange

Image from RRHS catalog

Butter is a 423-pound lonely teen, who got his name after an incident in which he ate an entire stick of dirty butter, as a result of bullying. Despite his enormous frame, he is basically socially invisible as nobody is willing to interact with him. At one point, he can't handle it anymore, so he declares online, that on New Year’s Eve, he is going to eat himself to death...LIVE! Unlike what he was expecting, he became accepted and maybe even popular.

His name is not always Butter. Online, he is known as JP. Anna, his secret crush, has had an ongoing relationship with JP, but she does not have a single clue that it is Butter. As the date nears, he begins to question the suicidal decision, but he must make a decision that can either take or change his life forever.

I would recommend this book to someone who is looking for a book with a very, very unique plot. From the first sentence, to the author's note at the end, Erin Lange places you in Butter's world, providing a very original perspective. You would like this book if you like realistic fiction or anything that you would see in our world today, but at an extreme level.
