Augum, an orphaned farm boy, runs away from his village when it is attacked by the sinister Legion. He is struck by lightning while running away and runs into an old woman named Mrs. Stone, who tells him that she is a warlock, and he could be too. Augum succeeds in his trials to be a warlock, and goes to a nearby village to celebrate his achievement. There he meets Bridget and Leera, who become some of his best friends. During the celebration, the Lord of the Legion, a man calling himself Sparkstone, razes the village and reveals himself as Augum's father. After the destruction of the village, Augum, Bridget, and Leera, the only survivors, escape with Mrs. Stone to an ancient castle. There, Mrs. Stone reveals herself to be Augum's great-grandmother. The trio begins their full training as warlocks under Mrs. Stone as the king's knights, forced to flee after their sovereign was killed, begin to arrive in the castle. After a demon is let into the castle and killed, the group realizes that there is a traitor among them. However, it is too late and the castle is raided by the Legion and Augum's father. The group is forced to escape to Ley, the godly plain, and recuperate their forces for another battle. I would recommend that others read this book, as it is a perfect blend of storytelling and fantasy. The author is extremely good, and it is the beginning of an excellent series that has become one of my favorites. In addition, this book is perfect for a few different audiences, as it has elements of humor, fantasy, adventure, and drama, and the later books in the series get into some pretty heavy romance. A must-read. You would like this book if you like… fantasy or Harry Potter.
